Tattoos have become increasingly popular in recent years, but what happens when you fall out of love with your ink?
I thought I would write a blog to explain the process and dispel any myths surrounding tattoo removal!
How does laser removal work?
My laser is a Q Switch Laser, it works by allowing the light produced by the laser to pass through the skin and shatter the ink into tiny particles, the body will dispose of the particles through its lymphatic system. The tattoo will gradually fade with each subsequent removal session.
How often will I be treated?
We need to leave a minimum of 6 weeks between appointments, this is to let your lymphatic system do its job of removing the shattered ink particles, and to not overwhelm it as it already has an important job to do! We also do not want to damage the skin so we leave 6 weeks between appointments to give the skin time to heal, this will prevent potential damage to the skin.
How long does removal take?
A removal session normally takes up to 30 minutes, but this is dependent on the size of the tattoo. Larger tattoos will need to be treated over several sessions. Many factors such as the density, colour of inks and the age of the tattoo can affect the removal process. You may need between 8-12 treatments spaced 6 to 10 weeks apart. Tattoo removal is a long process, but with patience and commitment, you will 100% be happy with the results!
Is Tattoo removal dangerous?
You will have an in depth consultation including medical history and a patch test prior to any treatment, this will ensure you are suitable for laser tattoo removal. My tattoo machine is very safe, I am a trained professional and will always follow all safety guidelines.
Does tattoo removal hurt?
Most people describe the sensation as very similar to the flick of an elastic band!
Although mildly uncomfortable, most people tolerate the treatment well. You can apply numbing cream if you wish. A frosting of the tattoo is seen straight after the treatment, but this generally fades quite quickly. The area is likely to feel tender for a few hours and can be red and swollen for up to 48 hours.
Can you remove part of a tattoo?
Yes! I can remove part of a tattoo and fade tattoos enough to be covered up well with a new tattoo.
Can all colours be removed?
No, not all colours can be removed, laser tattoo removal works best on black ink. The most difficult colours to remove are green, white and blue.
What are the side effects?
The following side effects may possibly occur.
Swelling and redness – like sunburn and lasts for only a day or two.
Blistering – This is part of the normal healing process, and the skin will heal correctly afterwards.
Infection – There is always a risk of infection. You must maintain good levels of hygiene.
Scabbing – Occasionally a scab can form, it is very important not to pick any scabbing, so you’re not left with a scar.
Hypopigmentation – Loss of skin colour may occur, but normal skin tone should return within 6-12 months.
Hyperpigmentation – A gain of skin colour may occur and is usually always a temporary effect.
Sunburn – Keep the area always covered with factor 50 sun cream
Lack of complete pigment removal – Some colours cannot be treated; a small degree of colour pigmentation may remain after treatment
Pin-point bleeding or weeping – This is all normal and nothing to be concerned about.
Allergic reaction – as your tattoo dye is released into your system, it may be possible to develop an allergic reaction. This is why we always do a patch test first and then wait up to 1 week before treating you.
In conclusion, tattoo removal is a journey! I will take photos before each session so that we can monitor progress throughout and remind ourselves how far we have come.
All I ask is that you remember why you are having the tattoo removed, stay committed and be patient as it can be a long process!
